Day 15 - Czech Mate - Italia ’90 One Day at a Time

The knockout stages have arrived. Sixteen teams entered this stage and eight would be gone in just four short days. Drama, upsets and goals all in store. On today’s show we have a very special guest on board in Ondřej Zlámal, a Prague based football writer who has fond memories of the 1990 World Cup as fan of Czechoslovakia during a momentous moment for his home nation and their football team. That sets the tone for our crew’s discussion on the game where Costa Rica’s brave journey came to an end in a 4-1 defeat to Czechoslovakia. Host Rob Murphy, Ciaran O’Hara and Colin Sheridan look back at that game and before all of that, discuss the big game in Naples where extra time was required to separate the side’s and Roger Milla cemented his legacy as a superstar of the tournament with two great goals. The second will live long in the memory as it involved him robbing Rene Higueta of possession and scoring into an empty net.
