In today’s show, Cherry interviews musician-turned-venture capitalist, Howie Diamond. Howie is the co-founder and managing director, Alpha Bridge Ventures.
Howie started his career playing drums in a band. The going was good as Howie and his band-mates even managed to sign a seven-figure deal with Sony. However, admittedly, Howie was way more interested in the business/managerial aspect of the music industry.
The skills and experience that he got here ultimately led to the music management and licensing company, Lo-Fi Music. Howie refers to this stint of his as his “Silicon Valley MBA program” where he helped start-ups scale up their business.
In 2015, Howie decided to kickstart a more broad-based fund, Ranch Ventures before co-founding Alpha Bridge Ventures.
In the next segment of the show, Cherry and Howie talk quite a bit about mental health – an increasingly relevant but still-ignored topic.
As a young man eager to make his mark in the world, Howie shares that his RPM was always in the red. He completely disregarded his health as he followed his passion at a non-stop pace. However, Howie got his big AH-HA moment in 2016 when he suffered a massive panic attack while on a flight.
This served as a wake-up call for Howie and he was forced to reconsider his priorities.
In the following segment of the show, Cherry and Tan discuss the pressing need for a safe space where folks in the tech space can discuss their mental health issues. After this experience, when Howie attempted to discuss his mental health with his peers, he encountered a high order of hesitation. He also talks about the difficulty he faced when he tried to find good therapists/resources to improve his mental health.
