Connective Storytelling Photography … No Business Needed! with Lindsey Shedd
You can be a photographer creating storytelling photography without taking on clients. Lindsey Shedd shares how she uses her own kids to tell stories filled with movement, connection and atmosphere.Introduction (4:21)How did you discover your love of photography? (4:43)After my 3rd son was born, I wanted to capture the bond and friendship that my boys share.Do you take on clients, and do you feel pressure to do that? (5:40)Not anymore. I pour my energy and focus into learning as much as I can about storytelling photography, and encouraging and teaching others along the way. How do you use movement, atmosphere and connection in your storytelling photography? (8:33)These elements all work together to bring the story to life. Elements like rain, snow and fog can also turn an ordinary photo into an extraordinary piece of art.What is you biggest influence and inspiration? (9:33)My kids. But I particularly love Norman Rockwell and Ansel Adams.Do you have unusual places you find inspiration (10:22)I frequent antique shops to find vintage trinkets that light up my creativity.How do you get it all done, making the time to learn and edit. (11:35)I don’t get it all done. I give myself pep talks to say that’s ok. That said, I do a lot of late nights with coffee!Do you feel pressure to be posting on Instagram all the time? (12:30)Yes! I have studied the algorithm, and the more you post, the more engagement you get, especially when you act with humility.Do you feel pressure to show up in stories too? (14:15)Yes, the more you can connect with your audience and show who you are, the better I can show them how much I appreciate them.Do you always know where you want to take an image in editing? (15:43)An image that speaks to me, and conveys emotion, even if it isn’t technically perfect, is the one I’m going to spend time on editing.Do you edit to music? (17:03)I like classical piano music. But I can also put on worship or oldies!What is your favourite image and why? (18:33)A picture of my son playing guitar next to a pond. The atmospheric elements created such a tranquil and peaceful mood.What would be your dream location to shoot at? (20:27)A farm with lots of trees and animals. How do you discover your own voice? (21:19)Shoot for you. Capture the world through your eyes, and with your vision, without falling into the trap of comparison.What is your presentation about in the Family Retreat? (23:01)Storytelling photography from the heart – my goal is to help photographers tell a story, create a composition that will make an extraordinary photograph, and elicit genuine emotion and expression from young children.What do you wish you knew starting out (24:02)Don’t be so hard on yourself and don’t expect perfectionism.What are you artistically curious about?
