The Pay Cut Price of Freedom

How much of a pay cut would you take for a lighter workload?  Today we hear from Paul, 35, who’s grappling with that question.  Paul’s boss offered him the chance to cut his hours and salary by 25 percent. He’d love to work fewer hours. He has a decent net worth, plenty of savings, and no debt. Should he grab the opportunity? Or stick with his long-term financial independence and early retirement plans? An anonymous caller and her husband want to retire at 55. They also want a bigger home, a better car, and to start growing their family. Can they afford it all? Tim spent his 20’s missing out on retirement savings as a medical student. He’s eager to catch up. What’s the shortest path to get there? Matthew and his family dream of leaving Florida for the Pacific Northwest. Will they regret selling everything to start over? Former financial planner Joe Saul-Sehy and I tackle these four questions in today’s episode. Om Podcasten

You can afford anything, but not everything. We make daily decisions about how to spend money, time, energy, focus and attention – and ultimately, our life. How do we make smarter decisions? How do we think from first principles? On the surface, Afford Anything seems like a podcast about money and investing. But under the hood, this is a show about how to think critically, recognize our behavioral blind spots, and make smarter choices. We’re into the psychology of money, and we love metacognition: thinking about how to think. In some episodes, we interview world-class experts: professors, researchers, scientists, authors. In other episodes, we answer your questions, talking through decision-making frameworks and mental models. Want to learn more? Download our free book, Escape, at http://affordanything.com/escape.
