AI Today Podcast: AI Glossary Series – Anonymization, General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), Uncanny Valley

In this episode of the AI Today podcast hosts Kathleen Walch and Ron Schmelzer define the terms Anonymization, General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), Uncanny Valley, explain how these terms relate to AI and why it's important to know about them. If you're not familiar with the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) is a European Union regulation focused on data protection and privacy first published in 2016. Although focused on EU companies and citizens, GDPR has quickly become a de facto worldwide regulation. This is especially the case for multi-national organizations who operate in the EU. GDPR specifically impacts the use of personal and private data in AI systems as part of machine learning training or any other usage. The Uncanny Valley is a dis-satisfactory perception of an object by a human based on the relationship between the degree of an object’s resemblance to being human and then humans emotional response to that object. Objects that seem too human-like but not human cause feelings of discomfort or aversion. The concept of the uncanny valley can also apply to the use of data. The idea is people will feel that systems are too intrusive when capturing more data than is necessary.
