Remus's fourteenth birthday is celebrated with typical marauder enthusiasm in Hogsmeade before tragedy strikes when Davey Gudgeon is severely injured by the Whomping Willow, losing his sight permanently. Consumed with guilt knowing the tree was planted to conceal his transformations, Remus signs Marlene's petition to remove it while the marauders awkwardly avoid discussing his role in the accident. When Sirius refuses to sign and argues the tree has rights, tensions flare as Remus finally explodes about the true danger he represents, leading to a emotional group hug that temporarily soothes his self-loathing.
