Roshi Bernie Glassman: Bearing Witness to the Oneness of Life 2011 (Part 4 of 6)

Episode Description: Hope and expectations. Bernie invites an audience member to speak about her own path of service and how to overcome the well-meaning help we get. He talks about the origins of Greyston—an experiment of social engagement on a large scale in the early ’80s, that looked at homelessness, jobs, and permanent housing. “I put a lot of importance on trying to bring folks to this place of not knowing, to bearing witness…Enter it without any ideas. Can you do that? Can you be totally open to that environment you want to work in? And then bear witness to it? That is, don’t let your brain do what it normally wants to do: Oh I can fix that, man! Bear witness to it. And then see what comes up. And go with it.”
