“This is a revolutionary space.” Mr. Julian Johnson-Marshall High School English Teacher “Don’t wish for it, work for it” This week, we are joined by High School English Teacher Mr. Julian Johnson-Marshall, a Kansas City, Missouri native who is incredibly proud of building his educational career in his hometown. After having a lit educational experience, Julian reflects on the transition from public/charter elementary school to private suburban high school, the long-lasting impact of Trayvon Martin’s murder, and how the state of hip hop in 2013 led him to mentoring. “I want to be the teacher that teaches teachers how to teach.” Are schools designed to support students of color? Well, if you want them to be. Julian speaks about the ripple effect of No Child Left Behind, the long lasting impact of white educators with golden parachutes in and rocket ships out, and teaching kids how to think vs. how to take a test. Tune in to hear about the power of community, the impact of the Black male educator collective, and why having Black educators and mentors made him into a dope person.

Teachers are Earth's Mightiest Superheroes and their stories can inspire generations. The Black Educators Matter: Project 500 Podcast is on a journey to share the stories of 500 Black educators. Why? Research shows that Black students who have even one Black teacher are more likely to graduate, attend college, and see themselves reflected in positions of leadership. White students also benefit from learning from a diverse teaching force. This podcast is necessary because storytelling is the bridge that connects data to humanity—showing the world why Black educators matter.
