The Counselor's Office

"Start somewhere!" Ms. Brya Potter, School Counselor How can schools become more inclusive and reflective spaces? Let's take a trip to the Counselor's Office! Today, we are joined by Ms. Brya Potter, former substitute teacher, current School Counselor, and future administrator. During our conversation, we unpack the blessing and heaviness of sitting in the Counselor's seat. Ms. Potter speaks about bias within the classroom, understanding the numbers (90% of teachers are what???) and the impact of ACES. Brya also reflects on the role of environment in your professional journey, the importance of relationship building (teachers and families) over time, and the unfortunate and disproportionate realities within our school communities. Let's explore suspension rates, restorative practices, and dismantling systems designed to oppress Black students and educators. There's a lot of work that needs to be done, with incredible urgency... we may not have all the answers, but we know that we need to start somewhere. Tune in!
