Allyson - Drunk at 13, Avoider, Saying Goodbye to Yourself

“My doctor asked me if I had anything else I wanted to talk about before I left and I said yeah ‘Am i an alcoholic?’”  Allyson, a guide, healer and coach, still found herself like many of us having the realization that drinking may not serve her but not committing to the change for years. With a complicated family story deserving of a white board sketch, Allyson started drinking in her early teens but gave it up shortly after when she saw the destruction it caused. Her drinking would ebb and flow but she slowly saw it increase to the point where one two many glasses of wine led her sobbing on the floor and finding her way to sobriety, recently celebrating one year on October 22nd.  Allyson shares about how when she was presented with the idea that she was dependent on alcohol it was enough to make a switch because as an independent, driven woman she didn't want to be dependent on anything.  She shares about the labels of a drinker and that she doesn't see herself as an alcoholic or dependent but rather an avoider who used alcohol to avoid the pain she was in. We talk about how unfamiliar truly feeling your feelings can feel when we’ve been damping them down for years with alcohol. And how mind blown she has been at the change in friendships once she became a non-drinker and that other’s responses are rarely about you but their own stuff. Welcome to Sober·ish Uprising, a space where we share all versions of sobriety. We believe labeling sobriety as black and white is a limitation to those who know they want to do things differently and complete sobriety doesn’t work for them. On Sober·ish uprising we share sober·ish stories and the freedom that comes when we say no to booze. Hosted by Holly Krivokapich, a certified coach and former heavy drinker, who started a sober·ish journey in 2021 and her world has never been the same. www.soberishuprising.com
