Wendell -  Adding Sober Spaces to our Idea of Inclusivity

A young, sober Wendell attended more AA meetings by the age of 12 than most ever will. Wanting to spend time with his pops so he accompanied his father to AA meetings all over Queens, New York for years seeing all the different ways alcohol affected people. Those lessons and stories would stick with him AND he would still have to find his own way to being sober·ish. From drinking 8 days a week and using booze as an escape hatch to being mindful to how it impacts the way he shows up, Wendell shares with honesty his version of sobriety.  We talk about how we should all be more inclusive in our  social and professional networking opportunities so we don’t leave out people who don’t drink for whatever reason they choose.   He shares how the realization that he could drink while working lead him to create his “whiskey and work” playlist that eventually led to his version of “rock bottom”. We talk about how drinking plays into black and brown culture and how that altered his perspective of what a “drinking problem” was growing up on the streets of NYC in the 80s and 90s.  Inclusivity is something we talk about alot and we 1000% should be. Let’s also expand our way of thinking about inclusivity when it comes to events with booze. By adding a mocktail station or making it a dry event, that can go a long way in ensuring all people can partake.  Love this podcast? Welcome to Sober·ish Uprising, a space where we share all versions of sobriety. We believe labeling sobriety as black and white is a limitation to those who know they want to do things differently and complete sobriety doesn’t work for them. On Sober·ish uprising we share sober·ish stories and the freedom that comes when we say no to booze. Hosted by Holly Krivokapich, a certified coach and former heavy drinker, who started a sober·ish journey in 2021 and her world has never been the same. www.soberishuprising.com
