Dr Anna Holmes: From Cure to Healing – the Rediscovery of Spirit and Hope

Anna Holmes trained in medicine at the Edinburgh Medical School. She worked in general practice for 42 years in Scotland, New Zealand, Tanzania and briefly in Bangladesh and worked at Otago Hospice in Dunedin for 10 years. Currently, Anna is a part-time Professional Practice Fellow at the Otago Medical School. She has 30 years’ experience facilitating workshops on spirituality and human growth and in 2011 completed a PhD on Embracing the Paradox: Spirituality in General Practice. In her presentation, Dr Anna Holmes explores cure and healing, and how they affect both patient and doctor. What is good care about when it demands contemplation, bearing witness to suffering and appropriate treatment to mind, body and spirit? What does hope mean and how is it enabled?
