Lewis Kaplan

45 years after graduating from The Juilliard School, I have a chance to chat with my former violin professor there, Lewis Kaplan. At 91, Kaplan is a senior professor of violin and chamber music at Juilliard and is still running 2 Bach Festivals. We chat about the legendary Ivan Galamian, who we both studied with, whether or not I practiced as a student, being a founding member of The Aeolian Chamber Players, the changing art of teaching in the 21st century and more.

For the Greater Groove: The Future of Strings is a collection of chats/jams with some of the leaders in the progressive string playing community. The focus is on grooving and playing rhythm strings, like rhythm guitar. Grooving is the crucial entry point into our popular musical culture and something virtually ignored in traditional classical training. Besides chatting about grooving and related issues, and anything else my guests want to chat about, many shows include a ”Groove Hacker” segment in which we take a groove from a recording and recreate it on strings. And every show ends with a segment called called ”Not My Gig”, a 3 question trivia quiz on a subject the I’m hoping my guest knows nothing about. https://www.tracysilverman.com https://www.strumbowing.com
