It may be jarring to consider, but there are currently more slaves in the world now than at any other point in history. According to figures from the United Nations' International Labour Organization (ILO) and the Walk Free Foundation, there were about 40.3 million people who can be considered modern slaves in 2016. That means that one in 200 people in the world is a slave.
