MEMS: WITH ALL (TECHNICAL) SENSES

What is smaller than your pinky nail, has AI in it and can analyze the air in a room and tell you to open the window when there are too many aerosols floating around? The answer: Microelectromechanical systems or MEMS sensors. In this episode, Melena and Geoff will focus on one of the most interesting MEMS: the rotation sensor or gyroscope. You’ll hear from Benedikt Funke, a seaman from the Deutsches Museum München. Benedikt shares how gyroscopes are used by navigators at sea as they are more reliable than a magnetic compass. Then, we dive into how engineering can be inspired by nature as we hear Biologist Brad Dickerson explain the connection of MEMS to insects such as houseflies, blow flies, and mosquitoes. We will also go on a MEMS journey with Bosch Engineer Emma Abel and Richard Fix, portfolio manager at Bosch Sensortec, as they highlight huge trends like Edge AI and explain how MEMS are essentially the sensory organs of the technical world.
