Religious Trauma

In this episode, David Lea shares their journey of growing up in a multifaceted religious environment influenced by various Protestant Christian denominations. From an early age, he faced strict religious expectations from family and friends. Adding to the confusion were experiences of hypocrisy and exposure to other world religions and spiritual systems. In college, he abandoned many of these dogmas and began exploring his own spirituality, fascinated by different viewpoints but hiding them from his dogmatic family. In his mid-twenties, after making a series of poor life choices and facing a personal crisis, he turned back to religion for salvation. He prayed to God, and it felt like it worked. He became heavily involved in a church, took a job as a vocational lay-pastor, and began classes at Fuller Theological Seminary in Pasadena, CA. However, over time, he felt restricted once more and started searching again, eventually finding a deeper harmony in his faith that continues to grow today. He has shed much of the shame-filled dogma from his childhood but recognize how deeply the spiritual wounds have impacted his future.
