Knowing When To Speak Up At Work

Complaining and speaking up are not the same thing! Everyone should be comfortable with speaking up at work. The first reason to speak up at work is to share an opinion about something. Chances are, you were hired because they like what you bring to the table--your opinion, unique perspective, and the things you care about. Have an opinion and share it, but do so in a tactful way that doesn't put other people down or hurt their feelings. The second type of speaking up we need to practice is about driving actual change. When you speak up inside of your organization to drive change, the most important thing you can do is have a solution. A lot of employees are good at complaining. But if asked what to do to change it, they don’t know what to say. That's not an effective way to drive change inside of your organization. It’s crucial for you to speak the language of the business and have some sort of a proposed solution that you want to see happen if you truly want to drive change. --------------------- The #1 challenge for organizations right now is how to attract and retain talent.
