When we don’t understand the other person’s perspective we tend to disagree. So often we are so busy trying to get them to understand our view that we don’t even attempt to understand theirs. We listen to respond not to hear what they are saying.When we are so invested in being “right” there is no room for understanding. You can try to “get it right” and not HAVE to be right. Unless the disagreement is rooted in oppression or denial, it is possible to disagree and still love and respect the other person and their opinion.Creating a safe space for someone (or maybe you) to admit they misunderstood is the greatest way to come to mutual understanding.
