I was looking through the roster of jazz birthdays for the month of May and decided to commemorate some of the folks listed both living and dead on this week’s edition of Jazz Unlimited with Paul Anthony. We’ll listen to music by those born in the first week of May including Maynard Ferguson, Shirley Horn, Ira Sullivan, Richard Groove Holmes, Blues and R & B singer Big Maybelle and those still with us…..40 year old trumpeter Ambrose Akinmusire and a special tribute to soon to be 85 year old prolific bassist Ron Carter. Mr. Anthony is a jazz expert who has done jazz programming on the radio for over 50 years including a recent 5 year stint on the All Jazz Channel for Sirius Satellite Radio. Through the years he has interviewed a host of Jazz luminaries in-cluding Sonny Rollins, Dizzy Gillespie, Charles Mingus, Herbie Hancock, and Mundell Lowe. In more recent times he has talked with Dianne Reeves, Bob James, Ellis Marsalis and all of the Marsalis brothers and John Pizzarelli to name just a few.
