Dickens (1859) It has been three years and the Revolution rages on, having removed the aristocracy and royalty from power. Darnay and Mr. Lorry are at Tellson's Bank, discussing an upcoming trip to France Mr. Lorry is to take. He is going there on business to try to save property and important papers for customers. A letter arrives for the current Marquis, and Darnay agrees to deliver the letter (they don't know that Darnay is actually the Marquis). Darnay reads the letter. It is from Gabelle who is in danger for his association with Darnay.
