'You like your girls insane' - capitalism, media, and mental illness

What is the relationship between capitalism and mental illness? What spaces for feeling bad and sad do contemporary discourses around mental health offer? This conversation was recorded at the release of Krakel member Fredrika Thelandersson’s book ”21st Century Media and Female Mental Health: Profitable Vulnerability and Sad Girl Culture.” The book examines mental illness and sadness in contemporary popular culture, by tracing the coverage of these issues in magazines, among female celebrities, and on social media. In this English episode of Krakelpodden Anastasiya, Annika and Fredrika discuss the "profitable vulnerability" of much popular and market-friendly mental illness awareness, as well as the radical potential of social media sad girl cultures. This is an anti-capitalist podcast about body, language, culture, and politics. We experiment, observe, and talk. Made by the association Krakel in Malmö, Sweden. Read more about us at www.krakelkrakel.com. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
