Meet Matt Georges

In this episode Kate chats to Matt Georges, an environmental economist with nearly twenty years' experience in environmental analysis, regulation and policy making in both the public and private sectors. He now has his own business – Orbital Applied Economics – but spent a large part of his career at the Environment Agency, where his last role was to recruit and lead a team whose aim was to use economics to improve decision-making.  He has worked on a wide range of projects including the mental health effects of flooding, how to improve reservoir safety, the profits made from criminal activities in the waste sector and the costs and benefits of reducing pollution in major industries, such as steel production and oil refining.  He was a key member of the group that produced the UK’s first apprenticeship for economists and is passionate about helping young people from a wide variety of backgrounds get into the subject.  He has two children of his own and spends too long playing computer games with his 11-year-old son.  In his spare time he is Chair of the successful Ham Parade Market, a not-for-profit project designed to revitalise a small high street, support local charities and improve community cohesion. Sending the ladder down is the concept of someone sharing their success to help raise others up. This concept is one that is close to host Kate Cousens' heart as back in 2018 she wrote and self-published a book called ‘Ladder Climbing in High Heels’ where she shared a number of ‘Ladder Lessons’ that she found useful during her 20+ year corporate career (https://amzn.to/2NQpvql). Since then she has gone on to become an advisor working in the SME space helping owners and senior leaders with their personal development and business growth goals.
