087. "Cutting sugar made me stop craving it": Gabrielle

Gabrielle had leukemia as a very young child. But it wasn't until her 20s that she started to realize what some of the long term effects of chemotherapy were.Gabrielle tells how during her younger years, her lack of knowledge about nutrition did her a disservice. Up to her her mid 20s, she'd been following the classic American diet. And she started having weight issues, even though she exercised a lot. It turns out that studies are showing that a lot of young children who had cancer are more likely to be obese. Gabrielle says that she followed terrible dietary advice. For example, she was consuming a high amount of dairy... including drinking large amounts of milk. And she often ate ice cream. And cheese. For Gabrielle and her brother, dairy gave them physical symptoms. So she cut milk, gradually... and after about 3 months she stopped craving it.For Gabrielle, gradually replacing dairy products (and other types of foods) means she can moderate them now. Once she was in her mid 20s, she started to learn more about functional nutrition, and adopted a more holistic approach to her health. She recognizes that the sugary foods she was hooked on as a child were the hardest to cut as an adult. But she learned to cut certain foods (and behaviours) that weren't benefitting her.
