The ego gets a distorted sense of pleasure by feeling a sense of self from and identifying as 'the one who suffers.' It will even fight to defend its right to suffer and maintain identification with the story it has attached to. By becoming conscious of this distortion we can free ourselves from mental suffering by giving up believing in the mind's stories.
