The Santa Lucia tradition: Lucia was a Christian virgin who was martyred in the 3rd century. The Swedish practice of Santa Lucia is much more to do with the practice of bringing light into darkness during the Swedish winters. A young girl portrays Lucia, wearing a wreath of candles on her head, and is supported by other young people, the girls carrying candles and the boys carrying stars. Santa Lucia processions happen all over Sweden in community centres such as hospitals, churches and schools. Hasta next time.
