Check with your doctor practicing any nutritional/fitness strategies, especially, before taking any supplements, herbs or using essential oils, especially, when pregnant or nursing. In conventional medicine, one of the most important and overlooked phenomenon thus far had been the constant communication between the gut and the brain. We now know that most of the immune system is made within the gut. Studies have now deemed the gut the second brain and we know from peer reviewed data that important mood stabilizing neurotransmitters like dopamine and serotonin are made in the gut. This may be why your anti-depressants or anxiety meds may be under performing. Unless the communication between the gut and brain is established with the help of nutrients, probiotics and lifestyle modification, treating gut disorders like depression and mood swings is virtually impossible with medication alone. Note, I called them gut disorders and not cognitive disorders as we were once told. So, why are these mood disorders an extension of gut disorders? We are now understanding from clinical data that the cross-talk between the gut and the brain and vice versa is responsible for both, acute and chronic disorders including but not limited to, gut disorders, auto-immune disorders, cognitive disorders, early onset dementia, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease, allergies, reproductive disorders, among many others.
