068: Dating Only to Get Married?

Dating with the sole purpose of getting married as the end game puts a lot of pressure and anxiety on something that should be fun—where you should be able to get to know yourself, to get to know someone else, to make a friend, to learn what you’re looking for in a mate. In today’s episode, I’m chatting with my daughter, Skylar, about expectations around dating. Relationships have evolved from generation to generation, and marriage isn’t necessarily the end goal for many younger people. Removing the pressure of an arbitrary marriage timeline keeps you more open to all the possibilities that life has to offer.  It’s about being happy with yourself first and then making sure that the person you spend your life with adds to your life and your happiness. What’s in this episode: Paying attention to what works and what doesn’t (don’t let the rose-colored marriage glasses keep you from seeing red flags) The rights that come with a marriage certificate Why there is less pressure on younger generations to get married Beliefs about marriage among different generations How to deal with marriage pressure from parents Why getting married isn’t always “the right thing” (and that’s okay) How the advent of the birth control pill changed women’s lives Having different values from your parents is okay For full show notes, resources, and links, head to: https://www.meredythwillits.com/podcast Are you ready to go deeper?
