146. The Myth of "One Day"; Spectrum of Strengths

Our journey begins with an autism diagnosis, a diagnosis that flooded you with a wave of emotions and the weight of uncertainty like you’ve never experienced before.  And then as you begin to navigate all the uncertainty, you're told that "one day," your children will overcome their challenges and live lives similar to their neurotypical peers. But what happens when that "one day" doesn't unfold as expected? The truth is, that the allure of that day, though well-intentioned, can lead you down a path of unrealistic expectations, overshadowing the uniqueness of your children's journeys and that’s what I don’t like about the whole “one-day” thing. As mothers, our well-being is intricately intertwined with our children's happiness and progress. The weight of our aspirations for that "one day" can have unintended consequences on our mental and emotional health. It's easy to overlook the present joys, accomplishments and even struggles when you become preoccupied with a future that may not unfold as you imagined. When you can shift your focus from "one day" to today, it allows you to embrace your life, just as it is, right now, chaos and all.  If you want to learn strategies and tools that you can use to improve your life along this autism parenting journey, be sure to get over and get registered for our FREE Course, Unburdened; Finding Balance Living Alongside Autism  www.notyouraverageautismmom.com/freecourse  It is a self-paced video course that will help you reduce your stress and overwhelm and show up better every day. Om Podcasten

This podcast was started for parents and caregivers raising autistic children but it has evolved and we have listeners across the world who are relatives of someone with autism, special education teachers, and other professionals. My son Jordan is 27 years old and was diagnosed with autism when he was 5 years old. I have been where you are. Jordan will likely never live independently. I am in the trenches every day, just like you. Each week I talk about topics that directly impact your life and go hand in hand with your unique parenting journey. info@notyouraverageautismmom.com Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/shannon-urquiola/support
