Caring for community nursing

Community nurses and care home workers continue to shoulder the burden of the pandemic, but many who work in the sector feel unseen and under-appreciated. The nursing profession is at risk of being overwhelmed by immense physical and emotional strain as the pandemic continues - so what support do our community colleagues really need? Special guest Dr Crystal Oldman, Chief Executive of the Queen’s Nursing Institute, joins us to explain the “hidden work” that takes place outside hospitals, and how community services are in serious danger of collapse without extra support.  Nursing Matters is presented by PNC chair Rachel Hollis with Professor Julie Green, Professor of District Nursing at Keele University. We want your questions. Tweet them to @theRCN tagged #NursingMatters  “It’s been so hard to never hear our politicians mentioning the care that takes place in people’s homes.” – Crystal Oldman “It’s very hard for nurses to admit that they’re under emotional pressure and need support – especially in front of their employers.” – Crystal Oldman “Think of the number of beds in your local hospital and multiply it by three. That’s the number of community beds in your area, behind closed doors.” – Crystal Oldman Presented by Rachel Hollis and Julie Green. Audio production by Alex Rees.
