Five “tourist explorers” of the Titanic lost their lives this week when OceanGate’s “Titan” tourist submersible imploded … a little over an hour and forty-five minutes into its two-hour dive to the 20th Century’s most infamous shipwreck. One looming question has been “why do people pay over a quarter million dollars — and these, their very lives — just to gaze upon a grave site … a moldering pile of rusting steel and iron dug into the abyssal plain over two and a half miles down, in frigid cold and total darkness?” Why indeed …. Here are some better questions: Why did the brash owner of the doomed submersible decide to call it “Titan” — a name, of course, eternally entangled in the same Greek mythology which named the original Titanic? And, why did he marry a girl who was the great-great-granddaughter of the retailing magnate Isidor Straus and his wife, Ida, two of the wealthiest people to die aboard the Titanic that fateful April night? And how did two other Titan passengers — billionaire Hamish Hardy, and Pakistani businessman Shazada Dawood — find themselves on the same “ill-fated dive?”; Hardy, a member of the prestigious Explorers Club in New York City, had some years ago journeyed on another controversial trip with Apollo 11 astronaut Buzz Aldrin to the Antarctic; Dawood had just taken a position as Board member of The SETI Institute — a Northern California research agency literally “listening for aliens.” “The Titans” — the ancient Greek gods who “gave birth to Mankind” — were, in the view of some current day researchers, actually “ancient human extraterrestrials” … making the “Aldrin/SETI space connection to this latest Titan tragedy” extremely thought-provoking ….
