Dare More Care Less - Tory Archbold interviews Sally Steele.

In this episode of the Powerful Stories Podcast, Tory Archbold interviews Sally Steele, wife, mother, style guru and author of the stylebook ‘Dare More Care Less’. Sally is from Glasgow and grew up with anti-affirmations, however was lucky enough to have parents who encouraged her to be herself. ‘Your individuality is something people often take for granted and they feel they need to twist themselves into shapes to fit in. If you don’t have that encouragement from a young age then you look around for it’ says Sally. ‘So even now, I give my kids the power to express themselves – my daughter used to go out in a floor-length Rapunzel wig, but I never let what others thought bother me.’ It’s about embracing your boldness and, as parents, learning how to pass that skill along.  Sally shares the biggest challenge of her life, which started with her move to Australia to work in the Film industry. At the height, if her career Sally was working on independent films like ‘Bowling for Columbine ‘I became pregnant and 4 days after my daughter was my Mum called to tell me she had cancer.’ Sally dropped everything came to Brisbane, without her husband and without her team, to help with her mother’s surgeries. On top of this, Sally’s father had coronary heart failure at the breakfast table. ‘I was living between two hospitals with a 3-month-old baby. I felt like I was falling down a hole. I knew couldn’t do it all and something needed to change’ says Sally. So, Sally called her business partners and made the bold choice to close her business. ‘It was hard because it was like my baby, but I knew it was the right choice’ says Sally.  Sally’s husband joined her in Brisbane so they could be close to family. ‘We were in 80k of debt with no jobs and then I found out I was pregnant again.’ Sally needed a plan to move forward. She asked herself ‘what skills do I have that I don’t appreciate? What am I naturally really good at? And, what is something that is easy that allows me both the heart space and the headspace to actually be there for my family and make money.’ We had a new car, which she wrapped and started ‘Steele my Style’ a personal styling business.  So, how can we embrace the skin we are in when we are carrying the weight of the world on our shoulders? ‘You can’t dare if you care’ says Sally ‘So, the first step is to ditch the inner bitch.’ Then tap into what you are saying to yourself ‘then take some time for perspective and then give yourself a pep-talk' and finally ‘know what makes you happy. I am a big believer in positive resonance – so each positive moment you have actually builds and broadens your experience of positivity and optimism. So, by focusing micro-moments of positivity, it actually allows you to build on that.’  Sally gives us her top tips so we too can ‘Dare More Care Less’ –If you’ve got those dreams alive then ‘do one thing to push it forward’ – even if it is just sending one email.  So, sit back and enjoy this powerful story with the extraordinary Sally Steele.
