Dr Alan Matarasso: "You’ve Got To Contribute" – A “Giants in Plastic Surgery” Interview

He completed a fellowship in cosmetic surgery under the direction of Dr. Thomas D. Rees at Manhattan Eye, Ear, and Throat Hospital/Institute of Reconstructive Plastic Surgery-New York University Medical Center.  Dr. Matarasso is or has been a professor at two medical schools. He achieved the rank of Clinical Professor of Plastic Surgery at Albert Einstein College of Medicine. He is currently a Clinical Professor of Surgery at Northwell Health System/Hofstra University, Zucker School of Medicine.  Dr. Matarasso has devoted his entire career to the subspecialty of aesthetic plastic surgery. His dedication to medical training, education, and scientific research is manifested in his membership and active participation in more than twenty regional and national medical organizations including the most selective American Association of Plastic Surgeons (AAPS), the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS), and the American College of Surgeons (ACS). He is an invited honorary member of the American Society of Dermatologic Surgeons (ASDS). Dr. Matarasso has served on or chaired the annual meeting program or instructional course committees for the American Association of Plastic Surgeons (AAPS), the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS), the Northeastern Society of Plastic Surgeons (NESPS), the Rhinoplasty Society (TRS) and the New York Regional Society of Plastic Surgeons (NYRSPS). He is or has been involved with the the training program of all plastic surgery programs in New York City and is actively involved in the Manhattan Eye, Ear and Throat Hospital (MEETH)—Lenox Hill Hospital’s (LHH) post-graduate aesthetic surgery fellowship. He is or was on the editorial boards of Plastic Reconstructive Surgery Journal (PRS), Plastic Reconstructive Surgery Journal- Global Open (PRS Global Open), and Clinics in Plastic Surgery. He was formerly a founding editorial board member and senior scientific editor and cosmetic medicine section editor of Aesthetic Surgery Journal (ASJ). He also was on the editorial board of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (APS). He is a manuscript reviewer or discussant for 22 medical journals including the Journal of American Medical Association (JAMA). Dr. Matarasso has authored over 250 articles and 75 book chapters and monographs. He has presented almost 700 papers, posters, and lectures nationally and internationally. He served as the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS) visiting professor from 1999 to 2001 and received their Jerome R. Klingbeil award for excellence in- teaching/outstanding instructor. In 2014, he was the honorary University of Toronto’s William R. N. Lindsay Speaker award recipient during their 44th Annual Aesthetic Plastic Surgery Symposium. He is the 2017 Rhinoplasty society traveling professor. In 2002 & 2003, he was an invited guest examiner for the American Board of Plastic Surgery for the oral board certification examination and since 2006, he prepared questions for the written examination. Dr. Matarasso is currently the Immediate Past President of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) as well as on the Executive Committee and the Board of Directors, as the largest society of board-certified plastic surgeons in the world. He has been a Member-at-Large and Parliamentarian and on the Board of Directors for the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS). He was President of The Rhinoplasty Society (2009-2010) and the New York Regional Society of Plastic Surgeons (2006-2007). He also serves as a Director on three non-profit, non-medical Boards. Dr. Matarasso sponsors summer internships for college students from the University of Pennsylvania and Brown University.
