EPISODE 23 Anawana Haloba + Zasha Colah
This week Radio Tenthaus hosts a live conversation with artist Anawana Haloba and curator Zasha Colah. To have or partly grown up during Zambia’s complex one-party-rule policy of the ’80s, and the ’90s’ vibrant transitional period to a multi-party democracy, is a common experience shared between curator Zasha Colah and artist Anawana Haloba. Through their conversation Anawana Haloba revisits some of the turns that have formed lasting inspiration in her practice, together they will travel for a journey of social issues and politics against a rich background of Zambian music. Anawana Haloba is an artist working between Oslo, Norway and Livingstone. She was educated at Evelyn Hone College of Applied Arts in Lusaka, Zambia. Haloba completed her BA at the National Academy of Arts in Oslo 2006, graduate of the Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten in Amsterdam, the Netherlands and an alumnus of the Smithsonian Artist Research Fellowship in Washington DC. Haloba’s work has featured in both solo and group exhibitions, including, Centre Pompidou, Paris, France; National Museum of African Arts Smithsonian Institute, Washington DC, USA; the Rauma Biennale, Finland; ZKM Museum of Contemporary Art, Karlsruhe, Germany; Museum Berardo Collection, Lisbon, Portugal; la Biennale di Venezia, 2009; Sydney Biennale 2008, Australia; Manifesta 7, Bolzano, Italy, the Sharjah Biennial 08, 11 and 14th edition in 2019 in Sharjah, UAE, as well as the biennales in Sao Paulo (2016), Shanghai (2016) and Lyon (2017). Zasha Colah is a curator interested in cultural sovereignty and cultural transference under repression. She co-curated the third Pune Biennale with Luca Cerizza, Habit-co-Habit 2017, and was part of the curatorial team of the second Yinchuan Biennale, Starting from the Desert. Ecologies on the Edge 2018, under Marco Scotini. Recent essays appear in The New Curator (Laurence King) as Clark House Initiative, The Curatorial Conundrum (MIT Press), Curating Under Pressure (On Curating), Liberty Taken (Stedelijk Museum, forthcoming). She teaches comparative curatorial theory in the Master of Visual Arts & Curatorial Studies department, Nuova Accademia di Belle Arti, Milan (since 2018). She is co-curator with Marianne Zamecznik of a year-long public art commission for Deichmanske bibliotek, National Public Library, Oslo.
