345: Play the Long Game: Strategies for Long-term Running Success

Many athletes focus too much on short-term results and daily or weekly progress, often leading to a plateau or a rollercoaster of progress and regression. This week, we discuss the importance of having a vision and long-term objectives for your running journey. We highlight the significance of 'value capture', where the value of a goal tends to overshadow the reason for pursuing it. We also emphasize the concept of 'process over outcome', focusing on the steps required to reach the goal rather than just the goal itself. The podcast concludes with the importance of reverse engineering big goals into smaller steps and using 'training cycles' based on strength, mileage, speed, or maintenance to ensure continuous progress.01:51 The Importance of Having a Long-Term Vision in Running02:36 The Concept of Value Capture in Running03:39 The Role of Vision in Sustainable Running08:01 The Importance of Enjoying the Running Process16:21 The Concept of Infinite Games in Running23:12 The Importance of Training Cycles in Running38:37 Conclusion: Running Your Life Thanks for Listening!!Be sure to hit FOLLOW on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or your favorite podcast player Leave a review on Apple Podcasts.
