This lecture discusses key ideas from the 19th century novelist Fyodor Dostoevsky's work, Notes from Underground, which raises a number of issues concerning human freedom, progress, rationality, and desire. Specifically it examines the assumptions made about laws of nature, social science and planning, and the will. These tend to be made from perspectives that could be categorized as enlightenment, rationalist, utilitarian, positivist, or liberal, which were quite common in the 19th century.
