George Dickie, What Is Art? - Attempts To Define Art - Sadler's Lectures

This lecture discusses key ideas from the 20th century philosopher of art, George Dickie's article "What Is Art? An Institutional Analysis". Specifically it examines the three phases he identifies in the history of attempts to define art. Phase 1 includes the imitative and expressive theories, which identify the essence of art with some characteristic that turns out not to be essential. Phase 2 includes positions critical of the notion of defining art. Phase 3 includes his institutional theory of art.
