Welcome to Episode 17 of the Salsa Kings LIVE podcast

In this episode of Salsa Kings Live, Andres talks about that age-old adage ‘When in Rome, do as the Romans do.’ An adage that talks about assimilating to surrounding cultures and societies, or in this case, the music that is being played at the time.

Andres talks about how he gets compliments that he feels he shouldn’t be getting. These are compliments for dancing ‘L.A.’ or ‘New York’ style when Salsa or Mambo are being played respectively. Andres shares perplexion at these compliments coming from experience and education on the different styles. The awareness is something important to Andres. He feels like this is similar to complimenting someone who dances hip-hop to hip-hop music: it’s not a particularly useful term.

Andres wants people to realize that there are numerous styles within the larger umbrella of salsa. Researching them shows that they vary in look and feeling greatly, and would make dancing far more rewarding and fun.

Andres asks everyone to study different rhythms of the origins and traditions of different songs and how they vary. Learning the differences and the history will give you a better understanding of dancing. Those of you who are interested can also access Andres’ free course at  http://salsa.teachable.com

By learning how all of these came to be and how they evolve, you can avoid basic mistakes concerning style and music that many make. Doing this can vary up your dance style and allow you to work with other dancers, as well as give yourself a better understanding of dance.
