In this wide-ranging conversation with yoiker, legal scholar and artist Ánde Somby, Sámi Ritmmat explores the intersection of sound, sovereignty and storytelling in Sámi musical life. From his childhood in Sirbma to collaborations with symphony orchestras and cross-cultural ensembles, Somby has carried forward two distinct yoik traditions—his father’s tundra-rooted herder’s yoik, and his mother’s narrative village yoik—merging them with new contexts and questions.What kind of rhythm lives inside a yoik?
