For those of us who grew up in religion, it was often this vision of holy joy and Jesus sanctioned satisfaction for our wilder side, all just on the other side of a god ordained marriage. But whether we ultimately ‘followed the rules’ or not, many of us found the shame and confusion brought on by purity culture to be a barrier to our greatest sexpectations and were left with a more Dickensian sense of ourselves.
