 The History of SLIME! 50 Years in the making: who Invented Slime? Why is slime so popular? Show Notes- The History of Slime: Slime was a toy product manufactured by Mattel, sold in a plastic trash can and introduced in February 1976. It consisted of a non-toxic viscous, squishy and oozy green or other color material made primarily from guar gum. Once other toy companies saw the popularity of this game rise, slime became the new toy focus. Kenner toys were one of the first companies to jump on the slime train. Kenner developed two board games which derived from the 1984 Ghost Busters film but used slime for the monsters. The company saw how popular the slime was and created more Ghostbuster toys with slime. Other popular media entities, such as Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles or Nickelodeon, developed their own forms of slime. Slime slowly began to decline after these organizations and companies stopped creating more oozing material. However, today, slime has picked up its popularity again. The first viral slime videos, starring fashion-forward girls, came from Thailand and Indonesia in 2016.  -MINT Michael Polk, CEO of Newell Brands, the parent company of Elmer’s, told CNBC’s Jim Cramer the trend has had a discernible impact on the company’s business as well, as kids race to follow YouTubers’ instructions. “Our brand managers identified the unbelievable trend with making slime, and one of the ingredients in slime, which is this ooey gooey creation, is Elmer’s glue,” said Polk. Retail sales of Elmer’s liquid glue rose 25 percent in 2016, and Polk told Cramer that from March to May of 2017, the Elmer’s brand had received nearly 200,000 social media mentions about slime. TikTok. The videos under the label “#slime” have accumulated over 11.3 billion views, and more videos are added to the bunch each day.
