My Abortion Story
Well this is probably the weirdest description I’ve ever had to write. Releasing this episode was just as hard as you can imagine. I went back and forth several times, and even now, I have a lump in my throat and am wrestling with the reality of letting everyone in on this super-intimate experience. But what’s harder is imagining another woman having to go through this, someone who can’t find a similar story to reference. This is for you. It’s just my story. I spared no details, we left things raw. It’s my hope that someone else out there will see themselves in my story… or won’t, that’s great too. It’s here for anyone who needs it. You can take from it what you will but my goal is simple: I want to tell my truth so it’ll reach someone else out there when she needs it most. There are plenty of stories out there–not enough in my opinion–but this is just one person’s (my) experience. I’m white, privileged, educated, and I still found my experience hellish. I won’t get into politics, but right now all of us, those of us who have ever needed - or will ever need - an abortion, are being threatened. I ask that you believe me when I tell you there is absolutely no reason to make this decision or experience any harder. It truly never gets old to hear another woman has “been there”. Whether it’s the first time you hear that or the hundredth, there’s nothing like the relief you feel from hearing someone else has felt what you felt–thank you for making me brave enough to share this.
