Yet George Washington was also a man of surprisingly style, and the home he and wife Martha Washington created, Mount Vernon, astounded visitors and has always occupied a prominent place in the American cultural landscape. In recent years, however, Mount Vernon has dramatically evolved as researchers discover how the house and its rooms were ablaze with color and pattern, and the vibrant palette is being reinstated—but not without controversy.
