She was born in Memphis, Tennessee, in 1964, holds a Bachelor of Science degree from Vanderbilt University, and has pursued graduate coursework in English and creative writing at the University of Memphis and the University of Utah. She has taught in both the high-school and university classroom, as well as in online programs for homeschooled high-school students. Additionally, she has served as poet-in-residence in various elementary, middle, and high-school settings in the United States and Great Britain, where she lived from 1999 to 2003.She lives with her theologian husband and the youngest two of their four children in North Carolina. A home educator and advocate for the Charlotte Mason educational philosophy, as well as a working writer, she is available for reading or speaking engagements at literary or home-education events.
