A man, a legend, a myth. So much is a mystery about Marcus Gavius Apicius the gourmet, and Apicius De Re Coquinaria, the oldest surviving cookbook from the Classical World. Before the word Epicurean was in use, there was "Apician" 'of or pertaining to Apicius the notorious Roman gourmand.'
