The Doctor finds himself wondering if people have ever been truly alone. Or is it possible that there could be a creature that has perfected hiding, lurking unseen next to us all? And what if that theoretical creature turned out to be the origin of the fear we feel when we're alone? Meanwhile, Clara goes on a first date with her co-worker Danny Pink, which ends poorly and abruptly, but as she joins the Doctor to investigate his theory through the past and future, Clara learns that her future with Danny may already be written.
