Ep. 74: Academic Facilities Management & IFMA Connections | James P. Gonsalves, CFM, SFP - San Diego Unified School District

Jimmy Gonsalves, CFM, SFP is a facility management professional with the San Diego Unified School District while he also serves as President of IFMA’s Academic Facilities Council. Mike Petrusky asks Jimmy about the special responsibilities and unique challenges facing FMs in academic settings. They discuss timeless wisdom about human nature and why facility managers must have an intuitive connection with their environment in order to best serve the occupants of their facilities. Jimmy believes that FMs must surround themselves with experts and industry-partners as they prepare for a future where building telemetry is advancing and it will be impossible to know everything about increasingly complex systems. The Academic Facilities Council offers FM practitioners managing educational facilities a chance to connect and share ideas with colleagues that have faced similar challenges, so Jimmy advises they seek professional development by reaching out to our FM community. Mike and Jimmy reflect on their time in Houston at IFMA’s World Workplace and the FMI Summit, while also bonding over their shared appreciation of “big hair 80's rock”, including Whitesnake's "Here I Go Again"!
