An APU Professor Deconstructs

In this episode Emily talks with exvangelical and former English professor from Azusa Pacific University, Scott Okamoto. Scott candidly shares his experience navigating life as one of the only Asian American faculty at a primarily white Christian university while also having “one foot out the door” spiritually, as he puts it. Join Emily and Scott as they discuss the struggle of living up to evangelical expectations and the beauty that’s possible when we trust our gut find our truest selves buried under the rubble of deconstruction. Purpose. Hope. Justice. For all those harmed in white evangelical spaces. Emily is a blogger who has been writing about faith deconstruction and religious trauma related topics for 3 years. As someone who grew up inside white evangelicalism (of the charismatic Pentecostal variety) and didn't leave until she was 35 years old, she's done everything from children's ministry, to church administrative work, to leading small groups and ministries, to church finance, to writing small group curriculum. Now she advocates for those who've been abused by those same church systems and doctrine.
