031: The Advice I Received Today That I WON'T Be Taking (And Exactly Why)

The words “triggered” and “mansplain” aren’t typically in my regular vocabulary, but as a woman business owner in my 20’s I’ve received PLENTY of condescending comments and emails. One that I received this morning, however, was so problematic (in my opinion) that I wanted to break it down line by line and share it with you today. I am glad that I’ve developed tough enough skin (though handling criticism is something I’ve openly struggled with) and did not take this persons words to heart-- because I know I have the data to back up the decisions he was questioning. If you can relate and receive similar comments and messages- I hope this will give you some helpful tips and strategies to decide if criticism is founded and constructive-- OR if it’s something you should brush off and stay the course. Yes-- this is a little different than most episodes (RANT warning) but I hope starting this conversation will in some small way help open others’ minds as this person did mine. IMPORTANT NOTE: I cannot definitively comment on or speculate on someone's race or identified gender and did not intend to do so. Regardless, my opinion of the comments made stand firm.
