Carter Dillard | Understanding The Right To Have Children

Legal scholar and ethicist Carter Dillard elegantly argues why the act of having children is interpersonal rather than personal, and shares his vision for a just and sustainable society in which each child is brought into this world in a manner that ensures they have an ecologically and socially fair start in life. His model seeks to replace the dysfunctional parent-focused model created by governments to ensure population growth and evade collective responsibility to invest in kids. He discusses why the rights to have children must be balanced with the obligations towards these children, as well as to the rest of the living world - both current and future. 00:00 Opening 02:59 Introduction 03:39 Motivation, animal rights law, child-centric family planning 08:03 Fair Start in life 10:53 International family planning community 15:43 Focus on prospective children, freedom, self-determination 19:49 Humane education, connections, equity 23:49 Democracy, schooling, funding 31:24 Discomfort, policy, vulnerability, empowerment 33:15 Care, pronatalism, growth economics 43:15 People as numbers 48:19 Framing for change 55:17 Inspiration to continue work 56:44 Learning more about Fair Start 57:34 Wrap up See episode website for show notes, links, and transcript: https://www.populationbalance.org/podcast/carter-dillard ABOUT US The Overpopulation Podcast features enlightening conversations between Population Balance Executive Director Nandita Bajaj, cohost Alan Ware, and expert guests. OVERSHOOT tackles today’s interlocked social and ecological crises driven by humanity’s excessive population and consumption. The podcast explores needed narrative, behavioral, and system shifts for recreating human life in balance with all life on Earth. With expert guests from wide-ranging disciplines, we examine the forces underlying overshoot: from patriarchal pronatalism that is fueling overpopulation, to growth-biased economic systems that lead to consumerism and social injustice, to the dominant worldview of human supremacy that subjugates animals and nature. Our vision of 'shrinking toward abundance' inspires us to seek pathways of transformation that go beyond technological fixes toward a new humanity that honors our interconnectedness with all beings. Hosted by Nandita Bajaj and Alan Ware.
