The mushrooms would then be hung near the fire to dry, echoing the stockings we hang today. Even reindeer are known to nibble on these mushrooms, leading to a state of intoxication that may have inspired the story of flying reindeer. These mushrooms were seen as gifts of transformation offered once a year.
